Bramer, Leonard
The Presentation in the Temple
Early 1640s

The blind, old prophet Simeon waited a lifetime for the fulfillment of a prophecy that he would someday hold the Christ Child in his arms. Here, Bramer accentuates the drama of this sacred moment with strong contrasts of dark and light, a feature that links the work of this artist from Delft with that of Rembrandt (to whom this painting was once attributed) and his followers in Amsterdam.
