Moeyaert, Claes Cornelisz.
The Return of Tobias; No. 3 in a series of 4: The Story of Tobias
Around 1635

The bold effect of this small print of the moving scene of Tobias’s reunion with his family depends on an unusually blunt contrast of light and shade accentuating the figures, giving it a slightly Expressionistic quality. Moeyaert initially established himself as a history painter with a strong preference for scenes from the Old Testament. He later began to produce etchings in a similar vein, typically set in bucolic landscapes or with Italianate architecture.
