de Hooghe, Romeyn
The Story of Tobias L'histoire de Tobie
Around 1703 v. 1703

Five important episodes from the Book of Tobit appear as separate vignettes in one combination image, accompanied by inscriptions. This plate served as an illustration for a late example of a thesaurus of the Bible, one that included summaries of the texts. Curiously, De Hooghe chose the scene of Tobias’s removal of the fish’s organs for the central image, likely because it alludes to several of the miracles that highlight the narrative. The young man wears an exotic headdress to evoke ancient custom, even though it derives from Italian dress of the 1500s.
