When placed side by side, this print shares similar characteristics with the previous plate in the series of engravings dedicated to the Book of Tobit made by an unknown artist after designs by Marten de Vos. In both works, five figures occupy the foreground. Moreover, Tobias and the angel are paired with the man and lady of the house respectively in each print, and an additional female figure stands near the central action. The warm embrace between the protagonists accentuates the grueling nature of Tobias and the angel’s journey to Ecbatana. Since Sarah, the daughter of Raguel and Edna, is relegated to the side, it is not immediately apparent that she will marry Tobias, although the latter’s faithful dog greets her to imply a bond. The subsidiary events spread out throughout the back of the print serve as a reminder of things to come. At right, Raguel and Edna host a dinner party to celebrate Tobias and Raphael’s arrival, at which point Tobias asks for Sarah’s hand in marriage. Meanwhile, at the top centre, in a chamber, the newlyweds are kneeling in prayer asking for the Lord’s blessing.
