Tobias and the Angel in a Mountainous Landscape with a bridge Tobie et l'ange dans un paysage montagneux avec un pont
n.d. date inconnue

The Alpine forest replaced the Bruegellian “world landscape” in Flemish art by the late 16th century. Here it provides the setting for the Archangel Raphael leading Tobias on his journey as depicted by Savery, who turned away from the older mode represented by his teacher Hans Bol. With no documented trip south through mountains, Savery likely drew on the work of others, as well as on his own imagination, for his description of rocky forms and half-timber architecture.
