Here, as with the other plates in this series, the viewer is immediately drawn to the monumentality of the landscape. The townscape in the middle ground is set against a river that winds its way through high mountains. Such terrains did not exist in the Low Countries, but proved popular on the art market in Antwerp and among print collectors in general. Although set in the foreground, near centre, it takes a moment to locate Tobias and the angel. Tobias kneels down as he tries to cut open the fish he has caught from the river. Tobias’s dog keeps a watchful eye on the lengthy fish. Raphael bends over Tobias instructing his companion to preserve the animal’s heart, liver and bile for a later occasion. Nearby, a couple of figures steer a dinghy as they pass by a water mill. Further up, a row of ships and boats navigate through the serene waterway. On the left side, below a tall tree, the angel and Tobias continue their journey toward Rages.
