Tobias Introduces Raphael to his Father acts as the fourth plate in Georg Pencz’s 1543 series related to the apocryphal Book of Tobit. At his father’s request, Tobias sets out to find a companion that will go with him on a journey to Media to collect the money that Tobit has left with Gabael in Rages. Unbeknownst to Tobias, he brings back the Archangel Raphael disguised as Azarias to his father. Tobias holds Azarias by the wrist as he leans in to his blind father to inform him of his companion’s presence. Meanwhile, Tobit, with Anna by his side, is on the verge of questioning Azarias about his familial ties and assess his trustworthiness in partaking in the journey to Media. Though Azarias appears timid in approaching Tobit, the God sent agent will successfully guide Tobias through the arduous voyage. Here, as in many other representations of this scene produced in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the artist has chosen to depict Raphael with wings to reveal the angel’s status to the viewer.
