Tobit Blessing Tobias (No. 1 in a series of 4: “The Story of Tobias”) Tobit bénissant Tobie (no 1 d'une série de 4 : Le livre de Tobie)
around 1620-30 v. 1620-1630

Of the three prints in this series that Van de Velde produced after counterpart prints in Van Uyttenbroeck’s series, this one departs furthest from its model. The orientation is reversed, the house is reduced to a strip at the edge, and the handsome frieze-like row of figures is abandoned in favour of a pyramidal arrangement. The angel receives large sweeping wings, and the figures’ poses are dramatized, with Tobias kneeling to receive his father’s blessing, instead of simply standing beside him to take his leave.
