Andrews, Stephen
Untitled from the “Dissolve” series Untitled from the “Dissolve” series
2013 2013

The Dissolve series features imagery from 1960s events that Stephen Andrews has composed from film stills or “frame grabs” of dissolve transitions between iconic photojournalist¿s images. Andrews captures the layering effect as one scene fades out and another fades in. The source material is mediated by their film Dramatis Personae, which animates images from the Ryerson Image Centre¿s Black Star Collection of photographs. This lithograph overlays a dark organic shape on the 1963 self-immolation of Thich Quang Duc to protest the government of Vietnam¿s persecution of Buddhists.
