22 September   Fabric Design and Block Printing with Jessica Trotter

This workshop will focus on design and hand printing on fabric. Fabric and clothing designer Jessica Trotter will lead a tour through Stepping Out: Clothes for a Gallery Goer. After learning about fabric design, colours and textures participants will draw their own personal fabric design, carve a 3”x 3” lino block, and create a hand-printed design on a ready to use tea towel.

INSTRUCTOR BIOGRAPHY
Originally from Waterloo, ON, Jessica Trotter moved to Kingston to pursue her creative and artistic practice in art and textile design. Her work includes hand-drawn prints, surface designs, illustrations, and fabric products. A graduate from the Craft and Design Textile program at Sheridan College, each piece Trotter makes is designed with a classic yet contemporary style created individually with a passion for traditional techniques. Though well-versed in the craft of textiles, her main focus is to create a beautiful range of art and surface designs while educating others to bring out the best of their designs and creative processes. jessicatrotterdesigns.com

17 November   Gouache Painting with Christina McLachlan

Gouache is an opaque form of watercolour that was used extensively in the past by graphic artists to produce a flat colour surface that can be layered to produce effects distinct from those of translucent watercolour. In this studio workshop, you will learn the properties of this unique medium. From laying a flat wash, to colour mixing, detailing and dry brush, you will explore the medium in hands-on exercises and small compositions.

INSTRUCTOR BIOGRAPHY
Christina MacLachlan has worked in the visual arts for the past 28 years, as an artist and arts educator. She is a graduate of the University of Toronto, where she studied watercolour, printmaking and art history. While living in Sudbury, McLachlan worked as a gallery curator and art critic for Sudbury’s Northern Life newspaper. The rocks and rugged character of northern Ontario remain as influences in her painting.
