Agnes Etherington Art Centre proudly unveils its latest gift from long-time supporters Drs Alfred and Isabel Bader. Rembrandt’s Head of an Old Man in a Cap, long considered to be a portrait of the artist’s father, is a remarkable early work, and only the fourth Rembrandt to enter a Canadian museum. Gift of Genius traces the fascinating story of the painting’s attribution to the Dutch master. With related prints, it also explores his use of the tronie, or anonymous character head, to evoke emotions and states of mind, an innovation that would mark Rembrandt as the artistic genius of his generation.
