John Clark's 'grey paintings' are autobiographical at first glance, appearing to speak only of the world, but to understand them at this level only, is limited. Although the 'grey paintings' in this exhibition are representative of only one half of Clark's work since his move to Canada, yet they reveal his development. Clark demands the viewer to examine both the object as how it's presented and the structure that it has been set into. Clark's efforts to guide the viewer's response to these paintings marks the beginning of a conscious reaction to late modernism.
