Fourth Rembrandt unveiled at Agnes Etherington Art Centre

A fourth Rembrandt van Rijn painting was unveiled at Agnes Etherington Art Centre on Friday morning.

Head of an Old Man with Curly Hair, signed and dated 1659, was donated to the Centre by Daniel and Linda Bader in honour of Daniel’s late father, Alfred Bader, who would have been 95 years old on Sunday. Alfred, whose connection with Queen’s University spanned more than 70 years, died last December.

All four of the Rembrandts were contributed to the gallery by the Bader family.

The piece displays the Dutch master at the height of his skills, said Jan Allen, director of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre located in the heart of the Queen’s University campus.

“It’s quite astonishing the realism (Rembrandt) evokes with really simple gestures of the brush,” Allen said.
