One of several works generously donated by Isabel Bader to The Bader Collection at Queen’s University in 2019, A Scholar by Candlelight displays characteristics of Rembrandt van Rijn’s work around 1629. Surrounded by books and a large globe, a scholar sits at a desk, writing, his brow furrowed in concentration. The contrast of light and shadow is accentuated by the copper support, which imbues the scene with a gentle glow. Fine brushwork, small scale and limited palette all support the painting’s attribution to Rembrandt. This lovely painting made its debut at Agnes in the fall’s Leiden circa 1630: Rembrandt Emerges, and is now travelling with the exhibition on its national tour.
