Slow down! Deeply observe works of art in With Opened Mouths. Guided by Associate Curator, Arts of Africa Qanita Lilla and part of Agnes’s Wellness Program.

With Opened Mouths interrogates conventional museum practices by incorporating African ‘traditional’ art from Agnes’ Lang Collection with art by Oluseye, a contemporary Canadian Nigerian artist. The contemplation practice, ‘Deep Looking’ is based on object meditation. This practice starts with connecting in and acknowledging the part of yourself that is witnessing the experience.  With Opened Mouths is about new ways of bearing witness, it asks: Can we unencumber Art from Africa from the associations given to it? Can we see these ancestral objects through new eyes in an environment that is not their own. Can these powerful works talk to us on a level that is beyond the intellectual?

Dr Qanita Lilla is a South African curator, researcher and writer with a PhD in Visual Arts from Stellenbosch University, South Africa (2018). She has worked in both state-funded and community museums for over a decade, in exhibitions, programs and research. She is interested in representations of racialized minorities, excluded epistemologies, the life of objects within collections, depictions of traumatic histories, as well as the social roles of museums.
